Objective assessment of physical function and work capacity
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive assessment used to objectively evaluate an individual’s physical abilities, tolerances and functional capacity.
Through standardized testing and functional activities, the occupational therapist evaluates how the individual performs across a range of physical demands.
Depending on the referral question, testing may examine:
- lifting and carrying
- pushing and pulling
- sitting, standing and walking tolerances
- reaching and positional tolerances
- bending, squatting and kneeling
- stair climbing and mobility
- upper-extremity function and grip strength
- material handling
- tolerance for sustained and repetitive activity
- consistency of performance across testing

Work-Specific Functional Capacity Evaluation
When information regarding the client’s occupation is available, assessment findings can be compared with the physical demands of their job.
Work simulation may also be incorporated to evaluate the client’s ability to perform relevant occupational tasks.
This can provide useful information when considering return to work, graduated return-to-work planning, workplace accommodations or further rehabilitation.
What does an FCE help determine?
An FCE can assist referral sources in understanding:
What can the individual currently do?
The assessment identifies demonstrated abilities and tolerances.
What activities remain limited?
Testing helps identify functional barriers and activities associated with increased symptoms or reduced performance.
How do their abilities compare with work demands?
When job-demand information is available, demonstrated abilities can be compared with the requirements of the occupation.
What should happen next?
Findings can help guide recommendations regarding rehabilitation, return-to-work planning, accommodation and progression of activity.
Assessment Format
Functional Capacity Evaluations are generally completed over one full day or two half-days depending on the referral question and complexity of the assessment.
A comprehensive report summarizes objective findings, demonstrated functional abilities and tolerances, observed limitations and recommendations relevant to the referral question.
Our FCE assessor has completed advanced Functional Capacity Evaluation training through the Matheson System.
Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluations
For clients whose primary barriers are cognitive rather than physical, we also provide Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluations incorporating standardized cognitive assessment with functional and work-simulation activities.
